What to Do in a Car Accident

After an accident, the scene can get a little crazy. Here's a checklist to help you:

Health First: Make sure everyone is OK. Don't hesitate to call 911 to get an ambulance to the scene immediately. When Emergency Services answers, tell them that you've been involved in a car accident, where you are (approximately), and your best assessment of the extent of the injuries (how many people are hurt and how badly).

Secure the Scene: If you can't pull off the road, make sure that approaching drivers will know that you are in the road. Set up flares if you have them, turn on flashers, or have a non-injured person slowing down traffic ahead.

Call the Police To File an Accident Report: You should ALWAYS call the police to file a legal accident report. It will be nearly impossible to file any insurance claims after the fact. Do not leave the scene of the car accident until you have filed a full police report.

Call your Insurance Agent: Call your insurance agent immediately after you call the police. In some cases, police officers at the accident scene will speak directly with your agent and expedite the process.
